Wasn't there an Old West outlaw named Hop-a-long Something-or-other? Maybe they got their nickname from hoplo (firearm) because they were trigger happy. It's a guess. Clearly I know very little about the guy.

They did like to borrow European words back then and pronounce them their own way, so it's possible. That's how a saloon got its name. It was taken from the French "salon" meaning a room where sophisticated men discuss things, but, well... the Old West. Nothing sophisticated came out of it.
