Thilly Norma!

I know it's not a word that Dr. Seuss invented, but it sounds like it could be.

Found to be solvable with moderate lookahead by valerie.

(Is it okay that I marked that? When I do that, I worry about stepping on toes -- I don't want to do that!)
#6: Aldege Cholette (Aldege) on Jan 29, 2019 [SPOILER]
Listen! Do you hear that? That's the sound of Valerie NOT stepping on toes.lol. I can't decide on what I think this image is of Brian. At first I thought a satelite dish. Then I thought a dude wearing his Sombrero inside out and possibly smoking a joint at the same time. Regardless, I like it.

It is a thong being dipped.
#8: Jota (jota) on Jan 29, 2019
I agree with Valerie, I needed edge logic to place the 4 R1.
#9: Carol Brand (KarylAnn) on Jan 29, 2019
Ohhhh...I hadn't a clue. Had to start over twice!
#10: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Jan 29, 2019
Ohh. I too hadn't figured out what the image represented. I am not comfortable with that.

No problem doing puzzle but don't know what it is suppose to be.

I'm just enjoying a little word play. The work diphthong sounds like dip thong.
#14: Aurelian Ginkgo (AurelianGinkgo) on Feb 3, 2019
The "ph" doesn't make an "f" sound?
#15: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Feb 4, 2019
I've heard both. The f sound is probably more common.
#16: Velma Warren (Shiro) on Mar 26, 2020
Odd. Fun.

I marked this with Moderate Lookahead before it was explained to me the difference between that and guessing. I am going to un-mark this puzzle.
#18: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Feb 3, 2024
... or not! The code doesn't currently let me un-set this. I'll add that to my To Do list. But please consider this puzzle's Solvability to be unmarked for now.

I'm amazed that nobody defined "dipthong" in all this time! It's a combination of two or more vowel sounds, such as "sound" which is actually three. Saound (using pre-vowel-shift sounds of ah eh ee oh oo)

Ironically "Me" has a single vowel sound (mi), but it's often turned into the dipthong May (mei) when sung.

This would be easier to describe out loud. :)
