Puzzle Description:
Listen carefully.
#1: Norma Dee (norm0908) on Jan 28, 2019
I'm lithening.#2: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Jan 28, 2019
Thilly Norma!#3: Aurelian Ginkgo (AurelianGinkgo) on Jan 28, 2019
I know it's not a word that Dr. Seuss invented, but it sounds like it could be.#4: Web Paint-By-Number Robot (webpbn) on Jan 28, 2019
Found to be solvable with moderate lookahead by valerie.#5: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Jan 28, 2019
(Is it okay that I marked that? When I do that, I worry about stepping on toes -- I don't want to do that!)#6: Aldege Cholette (Aldege) on Jan 29, 2019 [SPOILER]
Listen! Do you hear that? That's the sound of Valerie NOT stepping on toes.lol. I can't decide on what I think this image is of Brian. At first I thought a satelite dish. Then I thought a dude wearing his Sombrero inside out and possibly smoking a joint at the same time. Regardless, I like it.#7: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Jan 29, 2019 [SPOILER]
It is a thong being dipped.#8: Jota (jota) on Jan 29, 2019
I agree with Valerie, I needed edge logic to place the 4 R1.#9: Carol Brand (KarylAnn) on Jan 29, 2019
Ohhhh...I hadn't a clue. Had to start over twice!#10: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Jan 29, 2019
Ohh. I too hadn't figured out what the image represented. I am not comfortable with that.#11: Philip (Philip) on Jan 30, 2019 [HINT]
Any hints? After EL in R1 to make C2-4 white, I'm not finding any more moderate lookahead or line logic.#12: Rusty Nail (Sheba) on Feb 2, 2019
No problem doing puzzle but don't know what it is suppose to be.#13: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Feb 2, 2019 [SPOILER]
I'm just enjoying a little word play. The work diphthong sounds like dip thong.#14: Aurelian Ginkgo (AurelianGinkgo) on Feb 3, 2019
The "ph" doesn't make an "f" sound?#15: Brian Bellis (mootpoint) on Feb 4, 2019
I've heard both. The f sound is probably more common.#16: Velma Warren (Shiro) on Mar 26, 2020
Odd. Fun.#17: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Feb 3, 2024
I marked this with Moderate Lookahead before it was explained to me the difference between that and guessing. I am going to un-mark this puzzle.#18: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Feb 3, 2024
... or not! The code doesn't currently let me un-set this. I'll add that to my To Do list. But please consider this puzzle's Solvability to be unmarked for now.#19: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Feb 3, 2024 [HINT]
After edge logic in row 1, here's what I did. There is probably a way to do it in fewer steps than this!#20: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Feb 5, 2024 [SPOILER]
Column 13 has two places where the 3 could go. If you choose the lower spot, then fill in the 6 in row 8 and the 3 in row 9, then the 2's in column 12, then the 2 in row 10, then you get two 1's in column 10, and there is only one 1 there. So the 3 in column 13 must go in the top space, rows 1-3. From there, line logic to finish.
I'd say that is deep lookahead, but I'm going to leave it set to moderate for now, because someone else is likely to find a better way to solve it.
I'm amazed that nobody defined "dipthong" in all this time! It's a combination of two or more vowel sounds, such as "sound" which is actually three. Saound (using pre-vowel-shift sounds of ah eh ee oh oo)#21: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Feb 5, 2024 [HINT]
Ironically "Me" has a single vowel sound (mi), but it's often turned into the dipthong May (mei) when sung.
This would be easier to describe out loud. :)
Using 2-way/edge logic, the only way the clues make sense in the upper right corner is if the blots are substitutions for 1s. So I'd argue for moderate lookahead, but I suppose not everyone would be the same intuitive leap.
