Persephone? She was forced to marry Hades, which saddened her mom Demeter so much that she stopped growing everything, and all the vegetation dies. She told her daughter not to eat or drink anything in Hades' realm, and she could come back topside with Mom. Well, it turns out she's eaten 6 pomegranate pips, so Hades and Demeter strike a deal. For 6 months she can live above ground, but the other 6 months (one month for each pip), she lives in the Underworld. Demeter goes into mourning, which causes autumn and winter each year.
