Have you ever seen "How the States Got Their Shapes" on the History channel? I think you might find it fascinating. It talks about stuff like this and the host actually goes to these places and interviews local history buffs and residents. It really shows the culture that is unique to every geographical location that is explored.

No, I haven't, but have studied historical geography for a lot of years.
