I'm not used to seeing a menorah arranged this way. Was the candle on the end lit the day before, and that's why it's shorter?#2: Thomas Genuine (Genuine) on Dec 12, 2017
This isn't a menorah but chanukkia, with 8 candles plus an extra one for lighting the others. Chanukka is an 8-days festive. On the first day (this evening) you must light 1 candle, tomorrow 2 candles etc. It comes from the Jewish history (Maccabean war), pls. read others on wiki :)#3: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Dec 12, 2017
Ahh, so the shorter candle is the one used to light the others?#4: Thomas Genuine (Genuine) on Dec 12, 2017
yes of course :)#5: Jota (jota) on Dec 12, 2017
Happy Hanuka#6: Gaynor Sorrell (gesorrell) on Dec 12, 2017
The candle on the end is the shamus, or servant candle. It is shorter because you light it first, then say (or sing) blessings before you use it to light the other candles. The other 8 candles do no work - you may not warm your hands on their flame, for example, or use their light to read by. They simply beautify the festival.#7: annalivia (annalivia) on Dec 14, 2017
Thank you for the questions and the informative answers. Happy Chanukka!#8: BlackCat (BlackCat) on Dec 14, 2017

BlackCat, see puzzle #30638 :)#10: Belita (belita) on Dec 15, 2017
It's not exactly the original event of light. From ancient times pagans celebrated the winter solstice with lights and evergreen trees decorated with balls to represent fruit growing on green trees when the world became light again. We Christians stole the tradition.#11: Thomas Genuine (Genuine) on Dec 16, 2017
Yes, it's a Christian explanation :)#12: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Dec 17, 2017
Usually i wonder when I ask someone, which part contains psalms. Most of Christian people believes they're in the New Testament...
Well that's just silly. :)#13: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Dec 17, 2017
Florida is the part that contains palms.#14: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Dec 18, 2017
