Puzzle Description:

It is the third derivative of position with respect to time. Or the rate at which acceleration changes.

My calculus classes are decades behind me, but this puzzle has brought some of it back. I'm not saying whether that's a good thing or a bad thing ... but I must say it's a great title, Brian!

It's been a loooong time for me, also, but like Lollipop, I liked the title.

I was expecting Trump.

No politics, please, sunane.

I'm afraid I don't understand the title at all. Can some kind soul explain?

If your acceleration changed suddenly, you've been jerked.

Oh. Thank you.

If you say so.

And all this time I thought you were talking about a neighbor of mine.

Joe, Brian gave a nice explanation in his caption. My first life was as a physicist, so this is fun. I still tutor calculus and physics in my retirement, so ...

I agree that Brian gave a good explanation for the technically savvy. However, I was responding to a request for further explanation.

Yes, Joe is the kind soul who answered my inquiry. ^-^

I also saw "dt cubed" along with "What A Jerk" and was sure we were talking about trump (small t on purpose...nothing large about the man except his opinion of himself.)

No politics, please! This isn't the place.

Hilarious, Brian. Nice pun.

Good puzzle!

Reminds me of a history professor I had, he was from Britain. He told us that one time he was in an elevator, which made a sudden jolt. He said to the elevator operator "my, what a jerk!", and the elevator operator, an American, took it the wrong way.

For one of my math classes we had a visiting professor from Europe (I forget which country) who spoke English with quite a bit of an accent. During one class he was illustrating a problem on the chalk board and soon filled a large space with numbers, letters, signs, etc. When done he triumphantly turned to the class and asked, "And what do we have here?" Answering himself, he said. "We have a mess!"

This is so weird!! I JUST watched a Matt Parker video where he talked about taking successive derivatives to go from velocity to acceleration to jerk to snap (to crackle to pop). He collected data on a motocross track to try and chart them. Odd coincidence that an hour later this pops up! Lemme find the link....
