Now *this* is a necropolis: the cemetary in Metairie, visible from the interstate heading east into New Orleans.

The caskets all have to be placed above ground, because the water table is so high. It's impossible to dig down 6 feet without creating a tiny pond.

Good depiction of one of the multitude forms of cities of the dead from around the world. Whether they are repositories for the remains of common man, or of massacres, or ostentatious displays of wealth, they always serve to remind us of our own mortality.
