looks like a person

I'm beginning to wonder if there is some kind of class assignment going on or perhaps a challenge among a group of friends as we seem to have several new (as least the name they are using here is new) people making small puzzles who have never solved or made a puzzle on this site before.

I was thinking that too. I would very much like to know. If there is a teacher out there who is grading these, please respond to the comments enough to tell us what is going on. I just want to know because I am curious.

That said, I would say that I think this creature looks more like a humanoid alien, which is cool, too.

It happened periodically. We'll get a slew of new puzzles from new users, who rarely comment and never post again. This is the third time I've seen it (been solving since 2009 or so)

I'm glad you said that Kristen as I was getting a feeling of deja vu as I was solving.

I did some web searching to see if I could find the assignment that was sending students here. This might be it:

https://mathequalslove.net/nonogram-puzzles/

The author is named Sarah Carter, who, according to the About Me page of her blog, teaches high school math in Coweta, Oklahoma. Some of the commenters also said that they had shared these puzzles with their classes. So... maybe!

But then also there is a Puzzle Masters class from 2020, possibly in Boston, here:
http://www.giftedconferenceplanners.org/event-3608537
-- which suggests that people go solve puzzle 32408:
https://webpbn.com/32408

Then, slide 39 in this document mentions webpbn homework:

-- but I think that's more about solvers than about an assignment to come here and make puzzles.

Interesting!
