The name came from the explorers Mason and Dixon. The story is that they were fighting over drinking vessels when they came up with the compromise that Mason would drink from the jar and Dixon from the cup thus we have Mason Jars and Dixie Cups. Allegedly, the $10 note (in Nouvel Orleans) had the French word Dix (meaning Ten)on it, and they were called Dixies, but that's likely revisionist "history". :)
