#8: Nancy Anthony (nancya) on Jan 24, 2017
I remember solving this one in black and white a long time ago. Thank you for the colorization.
#9: Kurt Kowalczyk (bahabro) on Jan 24, 2017
yeah, I remembered it too. I didn't come to the site until a few years into it's founding, and right away I never looked at or solved any new puzzles. I solved my first 700-ish puzzles in numerical order. as the first puzzles submitted were primarily Jan's... and he was far and above any other creator's talents in those beginning days, he quickly became my favorite puzzle author. When you really think about it, he did an amazing thing creating this site, spending his time and energy into it with no payback for himself. I'm grateful for it. Ya know, for the first little while after reading comments and whatnot, I wasn't sure whether "Jan" referred to a man or woman. Kinda funny ;) Anyway, I do think having a Founder's Day is a good thing. Show that you're thankful and toss a puzzle out, fellow webpbn users! :)

I have never tried to create a puzzle so maybe this would be a good time to try for an easy small one. I am not an artist or a pixelator so I know my first try would be rather crude. I have however created knitting charts but never had to worry about solvability!
#11: Kurt Kowalczyk (bahabro) on Jan 24, 2017
I look forward to it :)
#12: Norma Dee (norm0908) on Jan 24, 2017
Nancy, it you have made knitting charts, you should be able to make a pbn puzzle. Just check to see if it's solvable and tweak it a little if necessary and you'll be good to go. Good luck!
#13: Nancy Anthony (nancya) on Jan 24, 2017
Thank you for your encouragement Kurt and Norma. I will see what I can come up with.

Waiting.......

Making puzzles is a great way to express yourself. When I started creating I didn't know what I was doing. People gave me positive comments and that helped me to open up and let my creativity flourish. I felt so welcome and comfortable that I started making puzzles about my personal life both past and present. I've made a lot of friends here and am grateful for it. Give it a try Nancy. You have nothing to lose and lots to gain. You will have fun. :)

I did a TON of counted cross stitch in my younger years, so it's easy for me to see the world in little squares. :D

This is wonderful in colour Kurt!

Replying to Kurt's #9: I met Jan in an online community called M-Net in the late 1980s. I too thought he was a woman. I remember thinking "That Jan woman has a lot of interesting things to say -- but why do people keep calling her 'he' and 'him'?" Later on he turned up at an in-person event, and seeing him in person confirmed to me that "he" and "him" were the correct pronouns.

Times are hard....for everyone. Covid, jobs, etc. I haven't seen my gf in over a year, due to the fact that she is on the heart transplant list and we're in a pandemic. It sucks. But we can at least text each other or make a phone call. I so so feel for you, Val. Time stopped, and you don't get anything new from the person you cared for. I wish you all the best (hug)
#24: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Jan 24, 2021
Thanks Kurt. I hope you and your girlfriend can be together in person soon!

I think in some ways it's harder to have a real living person who you want to be with and can't. Six years later, I still occasionally have something that I urgently want to tell Jan, but by now mostly he seems like a memory from long ago.

At the last concert that Jan and I went to, Don White sang this song that has stuck with me:

6 years....I didn't know the the guy other than a few emails we sent each other. It didn't seem that long ago. He was both a listener, and assertive. He was strong and knew what he had his vision of the site. And I always respected him. He didn't hem and haw. He had a vision and stuck to it
#26: Kurt Kowalczyk (bahabro) on Jan 25, 2021
I did try your song, but I turned it off. it hit home too soon, and I just didn't want to hear it. sorry. But I get why it stuck with you
#27: Valerie Mates (valerie) on Jan 25, 2021
I respect that. Just noting that it is an uplifting song, in my opinion.
#28: Jota (jota) on Jan 25, 2021
I agree Valerie.
#29: Kurt Kowalczyk (bahabro) on Jan 25, 2021
I'm glad to meet you, Val. :)

Days later, this discussion is still on my mind. Kurt, I owe you an apology. In Don White's song, his introduction to the song and the start of it are basically saying that losing loved ones is really hard. Then the rest of the song is about his way of coping with it. I really like his way of coping with it, and that's why I posted the link. But the intro and the start of the song both delve hard into how hard it is to lose someone, and I apologize.

You're all good. You know, I dive into songs too. Sometimes the beauty is in the breakdown. They hit home hard. And unfortunately I'm usually got a beer in hand when I do it. Which doesn't help. And then you get up again. I doubt you like it, but give it a try if you want. It's far from your style, but "Let Go" by Frou Frou actually has the line "there's beauty in the breakdown"
