Joe, it can be true, but there was a paper in 2002 with PBNs that contained human faces with two colours. Earlier this paper has the name Paint-It-Black and contained only monochrome puzzles. Originally published in Japan. I think Jan could see this paper...
The first PIB I've ever seen was in 1997 or 98.

Absolutely loved this. It is stunning. I first found this site when there were just under 200 puzzles on it. I solved on and off as to when I had a computer that worked. When I didn't I would go to the library and print some to take home. It was a long time before I had the courage to comment and then even longer to try my hand at creating.
