Puzzle Description:

...Republican Elephant Day

#1: Donna McFarland (jade8114) on Nov 5, 2016

This marks the debut of a cartoon elephant to represent the Republican Party on this date in 1874 in Harper's Weekly by Thomas Nast, a cartoonist.

I tried to find out when the icon changed from what we know as the present day icon from the original one that looks like a real elephant. If you know let me know,

Two interesting facts I found out in my research for this puzzle, Nast was also the first one to draw Santa as fat and he also was the first to draw Uncle Sam modeling him after Abraham Lincoln.

Maybe this was it?

Kristen, that was Nast's original, and I found that one. When did it change from that type of elephant to the one like in the puzzle? That is what I could not find.

I found a button from 1984, but I can't pin down (so to speak) a date or designer.

Oh, here's one from 1976: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/73/05/89/730589f7295b99b9a229df9da1d404ca.jpg

1972 was emblem free, so presumably it was designed for the 1976 election.

Kristen the 1972 one shows both elephants. Thanks for looking for this. That is one of the things that keeps this series so enjoyable to me. I keep learning new stuff through my research and other's research and knowledge.

I meant, I couldn't find the modern logo. There are elephants, but not the red & blue stylized ones.
