Yay! You got it!

Franz Waxman is my father's father's brother's wife's cousin, so like I said... a very distant relative. I've been in contact with his son, though, who has very fond memories of my Great-aunt Margot and Great-uncle Herbert.

In the late 1930's when things started getting really bad for German's Jewish population, films scored by Franz Waxman were playing in German cinemas. Many Jews who saw his name in the credits sent him letters addressed to "Franz Waxman, Hollywod, CA USA" that basically said "Franz! Buddy! Pal! Remember me? *wink wink* We used to sit together in science? *wink wink* I hear you're in the US now! Any chance you'd be willing to sponsor me and my family coming there to join you?"

He sponsored every single one of them.

What a story. You and all your relatives must be very proud.

Wow, that's amazing! Sounds like your relative is one of the many unsung heroes of WWII.

Norma - I'm prouder of him for that than for all of his musical accolades combined.
