Puzzle Description:

July 1st is both Canada Day and Memorial Day in Newfoundland, commemorating the loss of nearly an entire regiment of Newfoundland soldiers at the Battle of the Somme in WWI. Of 780 soldiers that took the charge, 68 were able to attend roll call the next day. The Caribou is the emblem of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, and part of the memorial in St. Johns.

This is an awesome puzzle Franklin. I love the way you incorporated the moose with an awesome rack into our flag and as a Canadian I appreciate the history lesson. I am a bit embarrassed and ashamed that I knew nothing about this battle though. :)

I read about that battle in the paper this morning. It was 100 years ago today. The crater is still there, where the English tunneled under the ground and blew up the German trenches. But not many of the Germans were killed, and it left the English as sitting ducks. The paper didn't mention the Canadian regiment, but it makes sense they would be with the English. Beautiful puzzle and beautiful sentiment.
