It's the Hebrew spelling of the word Chai which means Life and is pronounced like hi with a soft guttural ch. ×—×™ is read from right to left. The two letters are the eighth and tenth letters of the Hebrew alphabet, so the number eighteen has a special significance, which is why money gifts for celebrations and charitable donations are usually multiples of eighteen. The toast L'chaim, pronounced le chayim, means To Life.
