In golf, putting hitting order is determined by furthest from the pin, This is for safety so that you don't get in front of anyone hitting their next shot toward the hole.
When putting it is considered poor etiquette to stand on someone's line toward the hole. To avoid this, you follow the same rule. So if "you're away", you putt first.
