I like how the song has had different meanings to me over the years. I was a little kid when I first heard it, and I think I thought it was about the stages of life: being born, growing up, growing old.
As a teenager I thought it was about how sad it is that life is so busy that people have to accept that the reality that they don't get as much time together as they would like.
As an adult, I hear it as a commentary on our choices that make us too busy to spend time with our loved ones, and a warning to think about whether we are choosing wisely. I think that has to be what Harry Chapin intended the song to be about in the first place. Though maybe in another decade I'll hear yet another meaning in the song.
As an aside, when I was a kid, Chapin himself used to come out to my summer camp once a year and sing to us. I had no idea then that he was special.
