Puzzle Description:

Indiana State Flag

#1: Debra Greene (dlegreen) on Mar 18, 2008 [SPOILER]

I've just done some of the national flags and I happen to like them although I know many find them too easy. This one's pretty easy also, but I just still trying to add to the general store of knowledge in the world. Most state flags are just no doable!

Very neat puzzle- and I had no idea what the title meant until I read your explanation. No clue there! Thanks.

LOL, Debra! I thought about titling #2374 something like that. Did you do that one? I haven't had a look at many other state flags, but I imagine some of them might be a lot more interesting (as a puzzle) than many national flags.

On the other hand, the national flags are often a fun way for new people to introduce themselves. And everyone should know, if you see one or two stars (squares?) on the easiness rating, and you don't like easy puzzles, don't do them!

very nice puzzle ... thanks :)

#2374 is not mine. I will have to seek it out. I like the smaller puzzles so I've been going through the whole repertoire from smallest to largest and hit a bunch of flag puzzles in a row. Very emotional issue! I agree that they are good starter puzzles and if that's not what you are looking for than don't do them! Thanks for the comments!

Unfortunately many state flags include state seals, landscapes, animals and the like. Really not pbn material.

I just did #2374, Arduinna! Great puzzle and love the history lesson! (In comment #5 I meant to say I hadn't done it yet - don't know where "is not mine" came from @_@)

After I posted above, I looked up state flags on google. You're right. Unless they were HUGE, it would be impossible to make most of those seals.

I'm with you on the smaller puzzles. I've done every puzzle under 25x25, and I think all of them under 35x35 that are 2 colors (I prefer that too). Mostly it's because I'm a bit obsessive. If I start one, I don't like to leave it unfinished. If I do a small one, I can get back to work soon, but a large one will take up my whole day!

Thanks back!

My thoughts exactly! I'm up to the 30x30s, and get through a couple every day. I'm always excited when someone posts a new small one (and 2 colors is definitely my preference). Your work on puzzle #2374 was amazing! I'm looking at some other states to see if a more "stylized" rather than literal approach would work, but many, like Michigan where I'm from, would still be impossible. I have yet to try a 50x50 or so, I think you're right - it would take my whole day!

This is sparkly and eye popping Debra! Well done! You get a high rating from me. Can you tell us a little bit about it's meaning?

Thank you so much. This was fun from start to finish! :D

I'm afraid if I tell you the whole story you will realize that I took some poetic license with its design. It was created by an Indiana artist who won a contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1916. Here is the official description: "The field of the flag shall be blue with nineteen stars and a flaming torch in gold or buff [I did white to make it a better puzzle]. Thirteen stars shall be arranged in an outer circle, representing the thirteen original states; five stars shall be arranged in a half circle below the torch and inside the outer circle of stars, representing the states admitted prior to Indiana; and the nineteenth star, appreciably larger than the others [mine are all the same size]and representing Indiana shall be placed above the flame of the torch." Thanks for the comments - I think Arduinna wins the prize for state flag puzzles though, it's beautiful!

Terrific background story Debra. Now I'm even more impressed with your interpretation! Well done!

Excellent flag. :)

Pretty.

Used to live in Indiana so that brought back cool memories. I think it's a really good flag but I'm a bit biased!
