Found to be solvable with moderate lookahead by infrapinklizzard.#7: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Feb 9, 2014 [HINT]
You can also use summing logic. (I don't know why, but I noticed it before the alternating smile logic.)#8: valerie o..travis (bigblue) on Feb 10, 2014
After LL,
Look at columns 1-2. The remaining clues add up to eight.
Now look at the crossing clues that can fit into those two columns. They also add up to eight. That means that there must be a 1 from each row in one of the first two columns.
That forces r8c2 to be black (since c1 in that row is already white).
Then LL goes clockwise to the upper right.
Then you can do either the alternating smile logic or another bit of summing on the right side. (This time, c9r3 is forced black.)
Then a smile to finish.
Fun puzzle.

Neat logic in this puzzle, and I enjoyed the final image, too.
