Really captures the era, Linda - excellent! I'm a product of the 60s and 70s as well.
#3: Lollipop (lollipop) on Nov 6, 2013
In 1967 while still in our teens, a friend and I took a train trip across Canada, ferried across to Washington state, and then bused south to California, stopping to see the sights along the way. When we arrived in San Francisco we immediately took a city bus to Haight-Ashbury, but then were too timid to actually get off the bus and walk around. Mountains and valleys were one thing, but actual hippies and head shops were quite another. Groovy puzzle, Linda. Thank you.

I started playing bass guitar in a band in 1966,at age 14. What a great time to be alive. Great puzzle Linda, brings back wonderful memories.:)
#5: Linda Martin (ilovethispuzzle123) on Nov 6, 2013
thank you Claire, lollipop & aldege.

Claire - we're probably very close in age.

lollipop - that sounds like a fun trip and a great memory. haight ashbury was where it was at.

aldege - the 60's were indeed a fun time to be alive - a lot of change was going on. do you still play bass? did your band put out any records?
#6: Kim (kjh) on Nov 7, 2013
Awesome puzzle! I am hesitant to say that it was the hippie movement that made me a child...my parents got a little too caught up in the free love idea!
#7: Kathleen Carney (red45) on Nov 7, 2013
really fun puzzle!
#8: Linda Martin (ilovethispuzzle123) on Nov 7, 2013
ha! kim - too funny. thanks for solving my puzzle.

thank you, too, Kathleen!
#9: Aldege Cholette (aldege) on Nov 7, 2013
No Linda I don't,but I wish I was. My brother Denis still does and if I was still living in Ontario he would be bugging me to play too,but it's not really logical when you have young children.:)
#10: Susan Duncan (medic25733) on Nov 7, 2013
Groovy! I still have my heavy silver peace sign necklace. I was a teenage in the late 60's so got caught right up in all of the movement. Love the puzzle
#11: Linda Martin (ilovethispuzzle123) on Nov 7, 2013
thank you susan! I bet your peace sign is collectable these days lol! all of the stuff I wore is considered "vintage"! thank you for the comment.

@aldege - I played in a band back in the 80's. I had a young child then, too, and it really wasn't feasible.
#12: Aldege Cholette (aldege) on Nov 8, 2013
Cool Linda, what instrument did you play?,and what type of music were you playing, was it original stuff or copy material of other bands. My brother and I wrote a few tunes of our own,but never recorded anything. I got married at 19 and quit the band, but got together with my brothers persistence with another group and played a lot of gigs, but I had 2 kids by that time and it became difficult to do.:)
#13: Linda Martin (ilovethispuzzle123) on Nov 8, 2013
hi aldege - I played keyboards, drums and sang in a top 40 band (prince, Madonna, whitney Houston, genesis, etc.). we did a lot of originals and recorded at a studio in monument Colorado that was once used by earth, wind & fire. I loved our originals and hated the top 40 (still do :-)) our band was named "sapphire" and we cut one record "now we're groovin' ", that got local radio and club play. the only reason I played drums was that our regular drummer had a major case of stage fright and often wouldn't show up to the gigs. since I could keep a beat I became the band's "pinch-hitter" drummer. once my son was born, it became harder and harder to raise a child, work a full-time job, record in a studio, and play gigs at night. so I left the band and music altogether. now I just listen to it and isolate the drum, bass and keyboard lines (lol!) btw - I love your puzzles and really enjoy talking music w/you!
#14: Linda Martin (ilovethispuzzle123) on Nov 8, 2013
oh my goodness - I just went online to see if I could find anything about our record. I found it on amazon!

http://www.amazon.com/Party-People-Now-Were-Groovin/dp/B00AL3JCYG

we recorded this one at startsong studios in colorado springs in1982. I actually designed the label. my brother karl & I wrote the lyrics, he wrote the music and played the keyboards and trumpet on this record. my sister and I sang lead and backup vocals with a few other singers. it was much fun!
#15: Aldege Cholette (aldege) on Nov 8, 2013
Linda, that is so cool. It's a 45rpm which you rarely see anymore. I'm surprised you don't have a copy of it. I wish I could of heard it. Kudo's to you for recording it and getting air play. That must of been a highlight of your youth. Writing music is not so easy. Playing drums and keyboards is also not so easy. My prodigal son Brad took up where I left off but was much more successful than I was. His band "Three Orange Whips" recorded two cassettes which I still have. He,like his father played bass guitar and rhythm and lead guitar. They also got airplay on the McMaster University radio station which was a big thing in those days. I also find myself isolating instruments when I'm listening to music, usually bass of course, but I really like picking out all the instruments. Music is one of the greatest things in our world,if you've ever played an instrument, especially in front of an audience that appreciated your playing,it's one of the greatest and most rewarding things a person can do.:)

Linda, I always adore your puzzles! Thank you so very much 4 your creative!
#17: Linda Martin (ilovethispuzzle123) on Nov 8, 2013
thank you very much beth - I really appreciate the kudos!

aldege - I only have one lone 45 which I treasure. I like the name of your son's band. did they name it that for any particular reason? you know, I feel blessed to have played music way back when and not today. maybe i'm an elitist (or just an old fart wistfully pondering on my youthful days...), but something seems to be missing. actually, the bass is totally missing in today's r&b. I love the 70's r&b because it was danceable. rock still seems to have some fresh music coming out. I see you played bass and rhythm & lead so you did both lead and backup? did you do any singing? I also wish I had heard your music. I love picking out guitar lines. some of my favorite guitarists are (in no particular order) ernie isley of the isley brothers, johnny winter (I got to see him LIVE), stevie ray Vaughn, jimmy Hendrix of course, wes Montgomery, johnny smith (I got to see him a lot here in Colorado). there are many others, though. finally, I totally agree with your last statement about the rewards of music.
#18: Linda Martin (ilovethispuzzle123) on Nov 8, 2013
okay, I just googled three orange whips and it directed me to the blues brothers :-)
#19: Aldege Cholette (aldege) on Nov 9, 2013
Linda,my son's band took their name from something in a movie. I'm not sure if it was from the Blues Brothers,or something to do with the actor John Candy. I see that there is another band still playing today, named Three Orange Whips, not the same band I assure you. I actually didn't play lead guitar, and only played rhythm on some songs. I'm proud that my son played all three and played them well. Personally.I think I'm a better bassist than he is,lol. I did sing lead in some songs, but mostly I harmonized. My brother and I were quite good at harmonizing with each other. As far as great bassist are concerned some of my favourites are John Fielding(who played for Blood Sweat and Tears),Peter Cetera(Chicago),The bassist for The Cream, the bassist for Hendrix, and countless others. My favourite guitar player is Johnny Marr who played for The Smiths and is now playing for Modest Mouse. You should try to listen to The Smiths sometime and pick out his guitar parts. He doesn't play a lot of wild lead stuff, but his chord progressions and style are simply amazing. There are some good bands out there right now but not like it was in our day,but some great music was made since the sixties.I don't know if you listened to The Housemartins or Beautiful South yet,but if you do I would love your honest opinion on them. Some other great bands that I think you would like are James,The Killers,The Cure,The Smiths and Morrisey who use to sing for The Smiths. I could probably list another 50 or more bands, but I won't lol. In the meantime thank you for reminding me about Steely Dan,I always loved them and I'm enjoying them again now. I also dug up another OMD CD,"Crush" and I'm right into them again now. I love how most of their music has brass arrangements in them.:)
#20: Norma Dee (norm0908) on Nov 9, 2013
Don't forget Chris Squire.
#21: Aldege Cholette (aldege) on Nov 9, 2013
You know Norma,I did forget about Chris Squire,he was a great guitarist. If you think of it you can come up with so many great musicians, what a wonderful world this is.:)
#22: Norma Dee (norm0908) on Nov 9, 2013
My son and his friends treated me to a Yes concert where they performed on a revolving circular stage. One of his friends had camped out to get the best tickets so we were sitting in chairs on the floor right next to the stage. As the stage rotated around and Chris Squire was right in front of us he looked down at me and gave me a huge smile. Made me feel like a giddy teenager.
#23: Aldege Cholette (aldege) on Nov 9, 2013
Wow what a great experience that must have been Norma. Yes was an awesome band,I can imagine what a fabulous concert that must have been.:)
#24: Linda Martin (ilovethispuzzle123) on Nov 10, 2013
wow! I spent yesterday listening to the housemartins - really listening to them. the songs that appealed the most to me are:
1. happy hour - happy, upbeat. these guys can really harmonize. they make me think of the beatles and other groups where all of the members can sing - not just one or two of them. these vocals are strong and beautiful. the melody reminds me a little bit of elvis Presley's "pocketful of rainbows" and the chiffons' "you're gonna want me for your girl".
2. flag day - I love the chord changes and lyrics. I can't help but draw comparisons between the housemartins' lead singer and boy George, especially with regard to timbre/vibrato, but the housemartin's singer is vocally stronger and more versatile. I like how on this song he goes from a soft timbre on the verse, and then growls on the bridge.
3. sitting on a fence.
I also listened to beautiful south and I LOVE "Rotterdam"!!! nice, loping guitar. Their cover of "everybody's talkin'" is really nice, too.
I have always liked the cure.
i'm going to check out the other bands you listed and also chris squire.
if you have any time, please give a listen to steely dan's "king of the road". the guitar riff that starts at 4:22 is to die for: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJz0c981F7U
#25: Aldege Cholette (aldege) on Nov 10, 2013
Thx Linda,I will listen to that. I had a feeling you would like those bands. I find sometimes that I listen to a band for the first time and I am less than impressed. Then I'll go back to that CD and listen to it and it starts to grow on me,before eventually I'm totally hooked on them. Believe it or not,I hated Supertramp when I first heard them. Who doesn't like Supertramp?lol.:)
#26: Linda Martin (ilovethispuzzle123) on Nov 10, 2013
what a memory for you, norma! and out of all the people in the crowd...makes camping out for tickets all the more worthwhile!
#27: Norma Dee (norm0908) on Nov 10, 2013
My son had a great group of friends who did not mind me tagging along. And it was a great memory.
#28: Aldege Cholette (aldege) on Nov 10, 2013
I just listened to it Linda,I remember it but I'm not good with titles. Great song and that guitar riff is amazing. What an awesome band. Could you imagine seeing them live.:)
#29: Linda Martin (ilovethispuzzle123) on Nov 10, 2013
@Norma - that was very nice of them to let you go with them. your son is very kind - mine is too, but I don't think he would have allowed me to go see kitty, or tool or slipknot with him, lol!
#30: Linda Martin (ilovethispuzzle123) on Nov 10, 2013
@aldege - if they ever come to Colorado springs, i'm so there, in the front row.
