Dear annalivia, it's good puzzle! Have you learnt ever ciryllic alphabet? The last character seems strangely. Really it has to be a special "soft sign" character. I tried to say it as you wrote... difficult... :)
In the Soviet Union the so called Red October was in November! :)

thank you! I looked up how to write October in Russian. I have a friend who is fluent, but I am not at all. My paternal grandmother was Czech, but I never knew her.
LOL! I didn't know that about the real timing of Red October!

Unfortunately (?) Czech and Slovak and Polish are written in Latin characters, so it doesn't help :)
So: Great October Socialist Revolution was in 25th October, 1917. At that times they used the old orthodox calendar, which didn't know Gregorian changing in the 16th century. That day on the rest of the world was 7th of November. After the revolution they made the changing, so the second anniversary was already in November! :)
