Puzzle Description:

CERT stands for "Community Emergency Response Team". From the CERT website (http://www.citizencorps.gov/cert/): The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. I am part of the local CERT team, and encourage others to check with your local Emergency Management Department for information on local classes!

Not to be confused with CERN, which is a supercollider in Switzerland. :) (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire)

Thanks Deana! CERT is a great organization to get involved with. I had an employer that supported us being involved until a management change. Now health issues limit me physical activity in the heat and humidity on the Gulf coast. Thankfully i can use my computer skills and amateur radio license to help in emergencies. I am a Disaster Service Technology volunteer with the Red Cross. I am also a member of Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service, and Amateur Radio Emergency Service. Since we have to deal with hurricanes and other problems on a regular basis here, we can provide emergency communications if phone and internet service go down. There are lots of ways to give back to your community.
