Topic #226: Nicknames - Where did you get that Moniker?

There are so many unusual and interesting nicknames on this site. I'd love to know how you picked yours, what it means.

If you use your real name here, then what is your nickname in your real life?

Mine is Fasstar, because that's an acronym for my passion: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Support, Training, Advocacy, and Resources. http://fasstar.com

What is your facebook name? Mine is fasstar, of course. :-)

#3: Gator (Gator) on Apr 26, 2010
The pronunciation of the last two syllables of my last name.
#4: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Apr 27, 2010
first six letter of the keyboard, was more of a memotechnic trick then a nickname at first
#5: Jen (LightVader) on Apr 27, 2010
My little brothers were playing when they were little. The younger one told the older one - you be "Dark" Vader and I'll be "Light" Vader.
#6: Teresa K (fasstar) on Apr 27, 2010
That's so cute! :-)
#7: Hazel Hiller (hjhiller) on Apr 27, 2010
hjhiller stands for hazel jean hiller. As a baby, my sister called me "Hazel Baby" and I argued with my kindergarten teacher over my name. I insisted it was Hazel Baby Jean Floyd. After mom convinced me it wasn't my real name I was called Hazy.
#8: Wombat (wombatilim) on Apr 27, 2010
Once upon a time, I had a friend with a rather elderly and rotund cat. Some other friends of mine nicknamed the cat "the wombat." All of us belonged to a particular chat system online.

Some time later, I purchased a new computer, and asked of my friends what I should name it. Yet another friend from the same chat system suggested I name it "wombat," after the cat.

I found this so very amusing that I started using it as a name for myself on the chat system (as well as naming the computer that). The two friends who had originally nicknamed the cat were amused by calling me The Wombat.

Still another friend on the chat system went by the name "Nefilim" and took to adding "ilim" to the end of everyone else's name. Hence, I became "Wombatilim." Since that iteration was actually Internet Unique (a rare trait these days!) I took to using it by default just about everywhere after that.

The moral of this story is "Blessed are the easily amused, as they shall never go bored."

:-D
#10: Byrdie (byrdie) on Apr 27, 2010
During my early BBS days I raised and bred birds, mostly of parrot varieties. I was often called upon by other BBSers to dispense advice and I took on the handle of "Birdman." On a later system, we were required to use our "real names." The SYSOP there knew that I had an aversion to that and allowed me to use a pseudonym. I chose "Byrd Mann." Many of my current friends still hail from that era and still call me "Birdie" or "Byrdie." The name has stuck and I kind of like it.
#11: Merili (merilinnuke) on Apr 27, 2010
Merili is my name. I wanted a username that included my real name but in the same time was an actual word, so merilinnuke was born. In Estonian "meri" means "sea" and "linnuke" is "birdie". But everyone calls me Merka in real life :)
#12: Jan Wolter (jan) on Apr 28, 2010
My login "jan" because that's my name. Hey, I was the first person to create an account on this system. I *knew* I wouldn't have to work hard to find a unique name.

I've sometimes wondered that people come here and choose long, weird login names, frequently ending in numbers, when much simpler options are still available. I guess people get attached to the names they used elsewhere, or just don't want to try to remember a different login name for every server they use.

But in twenty-five years of on-line conferencing, I've never really acquired a handle. The nearest is "janc" which I used on many systems after some bureaucracy long ago attached a random letter to the end of people's login names to simplify accounting. It wasn't that good a story, so I don't use it much anymore.

But I like the stories many people have.
#13: Deana L (ffswife) on Apr 28, 2010
ffswife... married into it... married a fireman
#14: celleste (celleste) on May 2, 2010
In 8th grade we had to write our own myth about a god or goddess. I chose to make one up about a goddess of music named Celleste (and named my cello after the goddess). When I became part of an online community I chose that name and have used it ever since. It's very rarely unavailable as a login name as it's an unusual spelling. Sadly, Celleste the cello passed away a few years ago after a tragic fall in a parking lot.
#15: Susan Duncan (medic25733) on May 10, 2010
My real name is Susan and I work as a paramedic hence the medic - the 25733 is just my medic number at work.
#16: Claudia (clau_bolson) on Jun 5, 2010
I'm Claudia and I live in El Bolson, Patagonia Argentina.
No, I know this is not topic #220, the answer is the same!
#17: Jota (jota) on Jul 19, 2010
Jota is how you spell the letter 'J' in spanish. That's the first letter of my second name (Mary Jo) Many people call me just Jota.
#18: susan doe (sudoe) on Jul 19, 2010
At work, my name was shortened to SuDoe or SuDo from Susan Doe. It was "cute" and stuck. Decades later, it is mine.
#19: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Jul 20, 2010
i operated and owned a karate studio for 20 some years, my students called me sensei ...when i tried to use that name on yahoo chat, it wouldn't let me, sooo i tried sensei 1,2,3,4,5,10,100 to no avail. 12 years later i hang out in the 60's chat rooms. they mostly think i mean "sense I 69" which i'm not.
#20: Carol Brand (KarylAnn) on Sep 8, 2010
I'm Carol Ann. My Mom wanted to spell it KarylAnn but thought no one would ever spell it right. She also wanted everyone to call me Carol Ann not Carol. Nobody, however, calls me Carol Ann, heck my family doesn't even use Carol. Instead everyone in my family shortened my name to Ca or Aunt Ca.
#21: Ron Jacobson (shmily999) on Oct 11, 2010
See How Much I Love You = shmily
#22: Teresa K (fasstar) on Oct 11, 2010

#23: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Feb 18, 2011
I went with just my name, but on other sites I use Thorvaldsdottir, which is half of my SCA persona, Ingridr Thorvaldsdottir (daughter of Thorvald). http://www.sca.org
#24: annalivia (annalivia) on Apr 18, 2011

but NEVER owned by a man
#26: Hannah Johns (Nini721) on Jun 26, 2011
Hmmm, this is gonna be hard to explain... Well, I started as Hannah Johns, then my older brother who likes to nickname people, started calling me Hannini Jones, (NO idea why!) then my sisters shortened it to Nini. It was an odd chain of events, but I actually really like Nini, and it's stuck, so that's that. :)
#27: Jota (jota) on Jun 26, 2011
Nini is beautiful and very dear to me.
#28: Teresa K (fasstar) on Jun 27, 2011
I love it when newbies go through the forum and add their bit of color to the webpbn tapestry.

Do your friends call you Nini, or just your family? What would you like us to call you?
#29: Lilly Johns (LJohns315) on Aug 27, 2011
Teresa, Hannah doesn't get to the topics very often. Only family really calls her Nini, but you all can call her that. You're the Webpbn family. :)
My older brother calls me Lillagins. I have no idea how that came about. My brother is usually the one who makes up the nicknames. He gave Maggie Magginni, and then it was shortened to Ginni. When referring to Maggie and Georgia, we say "the littles"; also started by my brother.
#30: Maggie Johns (Magginni) on Aug 27, 2011
You probably know that my real name is Maggie. Then my oldest brother started calling me Magginni. after that, Hannah shortened the version of Magginni to just Gini (it almost seems like those names are my real names). :)
#31: David Bouldin (dbouldin) on Aug 4, 2012
except for financial and professional sites, i rarely use any part of my real name, but for some reason I did the first time I signed up here...dating back to the old bbs/telnet days i typically used one of two monikers (though neither were unique to me):

jlseagull - from my favorite book: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Livingston_Seagull

bauhaus1919 - A reference to both the Bauhaus school (started in 1919), who's style and philosophy I appreciate greatly (myself an Architect)...AND as a fan of the band The Bauhaus and John Cale (former Velvet Underground member) who had a solo album "Paris 1919".

but here, "dbouldin" i guess :)
#32: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Aug 5, 2012
One of my favorites books also, David
#33: John Macdonald (perlwolf) on Jul 30, 2014
I was co-author of a book about the programming language perl, and O'Reilly puts animal pictures on the covers of their books. Guess what animal we got!
