Puzzle Description:

Underground Gardens The inscription on the marker reads: >Here, beneath the hot, arid surface of the San Joaquin Valley, Baldasare Forestiere (1879-1946) began in the early 1900's to sculpt a fantastic retreat. Excavating the hardpan by hand, he created a unique complex of underground rooms, passages and gardens which ramble throughout a ten-acre parcel. His work is being preserved as a living monument to a creative and individualistic spirit unbounded by conventionality< if you've ever been in the Valley in CA, USA in the summer, you'll know what a clever man he was. This is in my home town, btw.

Amazing. Had not heard about them before. What perseverance that took. And he made holes so the trees could grow up unobstructed and get sun light.

It is a very "cool" place. Annalivia, do you still live here? I didn't know you were a Fresnan too.

Brian, I live in Panama on a sailboat now, but I spent all my school years, including college at Fresno State, in Fresno. My daughter lives there and I go back every few years to visit. Next year we're going to the Gardens.

I haven't been to the underground gardens since my kids were little. It's been awhile since I've been to the zoo too. It is amazing how the age of your kids colors your experiences.

I grew up in CA and had not heard of them. After living in the mid west, traveled back to see them and the marker for mussel slough tragedy. Was very sad the gardens were closed the day we went. thank's for the puzzle.
