I don't know phones by year (I still currently use a $15 flip phone with prepurchased minutes - costs about $100 per year, which is 1/6 of what my wife pays annually not even counting the cost of her smartphone) but this image is from 2003, and the Matrix was 1999 and the phone antennae didn't stick up like a walkie talkie
To me it looks like a transistor radio. In the sixties the "trans" went with us everywhere, like the smart phone to kids now.
