Well now someone's gone and created an account name "syd." and is pretending to be me and posting comments as me in many puzzles. I can only assume that it's Adam again. Whatever smart man.#2: Sydnee Sherman (syd.) on Apr 18, 2010
Jan is there something you can do to stop this?
Please help me! Someone! Anyone! I am like so totally scared! This person might be watching me! Maybe I will just ignore myself and I might just go away. I am actually so flattered that I have two of me now. I never thought I would be cloned, but I guess 2 syds are better than one. :D#3: Jan Wolter (jan) on Apr 19, 2010
Oh good grief. Please be less infantile. I have better things to do with my time than play referee.#4: Jan Wolter (jan) on Apr 20, 2010
My ability to tell who is who through the Internet is only fractionally better than anyone else's. I can usually tell if people are coming from the same IP address, but I can't tell apart different computers on the same IP (eg, computers in the same house or office or library), or different people using the same computer. Nor can I tell if the same person uses different login names at different computers at different locations.#5: Jan Wolter (jan) on Apr 20, 2010
Mostly I consider this kind of information to be semi-private, though I am not legally required to treat it so. But if people are going to be deliberately sowing confusion, then I suppose I should share a bit of what I am able to dig out of my logs.
"syd." always logs on from the same IP as "monkeyboy".
"syd" never, ever has.
I should point out that if I scanned my own IP address in the logs, I'd see three different login IDs there: jan, valerie and arlo. One should not automatically assume from this that these are all the same person.#6: Deana L (ffswife) on Apr 21, 2010
You'd also occasionally see "jan" logging in from different IP addresses. I sometimes leave my house.
Thanks for the info Jan. Thanks for also showing us what we knew all along.. While Adam says he is/was leaving... we all knew he wouldn't.#7: Jan Wolter (jan) on Apr 22, 2010
Only about 2% of all people who post messages like this ever leave. Which is OK with me. What bugs me more is that Syd, who is likely an innocent bystander, got dragged into this by a bunch of people looking for Adam under every shrub.
