It's hardly necessary for a bird who can run at more than 40mph and can kick hard enough to eviscerate a lion to hide. There were other birds that lived in South America that were the apex predators of their time -- many millions of years ago. But don't let that make you feel safe. They were up to 10' tall with an 18" beak. They are known appropriately as Terror Birds. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terror_bird )
