Puzzle Description:

The capital is easy - name the islands! (I left out a couple of the tiny ones)

#1: Minnie Fuerstnau (m.fuerstnau) on Jan 31, 2008 [SPOILER]

Cool puzzle- I like the lettering a lot! I can't name more than a couple; guess I should go there, eh?!?
#2: Jen (lightvader) on Jan 31, 2008 [SPOILER]
My parents went there for their Honeymoon. I can't name the islands though. I only know that the big one is Hawaii.
#3: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Jan 31, 2008 [SPOILER]
From left to right you have Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, Hawaii (the largest) The Capital is Honolulu..Do I get a A+... (My Dad lives on Oahu, my log in name is Hawaiian)
I don't know if there is a name for the smaller ones.
#4: Debra Greene (dlegreen) on Feb 1, 2008 [SPOILER]
Wow! Great job, Naneki! Does Naneki mean something in Hawaiian? I don't think I could have come up with Lanai or Kauai without help. And the only reason I could remember Molokai is because I just read a book about the leper colony there. Thanks for the comments all!

Great puzzle-I am about to go out and shovel again. We took our kids to Hawaii 2 years ago for a trip of a lifetime and it was even better than we expected. We went to Hawaii, Maui and our favorite Kauai. We spent more time hiking that beaching. Go if you can!
#6: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Feb 1, 2008
naneki means Nancy :) Your name in Hawaiian is "Kepola" or "Keoi" for Debbie. (All the vowels are pronounced)
#7: Jen (lightvader) on Feb 1, 2008
Now I'm curious. What would my name be?
#8: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Feb 1, 2008
Jennifer is "Kinipela "
#9: Debra Greene (dlegreen) on Feb 1, 2008 [SPOILER]
Cool! I think we should all use our Hawaiian names from now on! When I was young Debbie was an extremely common name. I would have much preferred being Keoi. Just so I get it right, are all the vowels long vowel sounds? So it would be Kee-oh-eye?
#10: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Feb 1, 2008
here is a part of the Language Pronunciation

a - sounds like [ah]
e - sounds like [eh]
i - sounds like [ee]
o - sounds like [oh]
u - sounds like [oo]

two vowels together=
ai" sounds like the "i" in ice.
ae" sounds like I or eye.
ao" sounds like "ow" in how, but without a nasal twang.
au" sounds like the "ou" in house or out, but without a nasal twang.
ei" sounds like "ei" in chow mein or in eight.
eu" sounds like "eh-oo", run together, as a single syllable.
iu" sounds like the "ew" in few.
oi" sounds like the "oi" in voice
ou" sounds like the "ow" in bowl.
ui" is an unusual sound for English-speakers, sort of like the "ooey" in gooey, but pronounced as a single syllable.

ku`uipo [koo' oo (y)ee' poh] = ku`u (my) + ipo (sweetheart)

I hope this helps

Thanks! I always love what I learn on this site. In 13 days I will call my husband "ku'uipo" and confuse the heck out of him!
#12: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Feb 1, 2008 [SPOILER]
Did we have this conversation on hawaian language on another forum already??? Nice job with the puzzle.

As far as my knowledge of hawai goes I know the capital and the rest of it came from Disney's Lilo and Sticth so I'm far from an expert
#13: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Feb 1, 2008
yes but this is a puzzle merits the Hawaiian discussion!
Don't you think?
Do we have any natural born Hawaiians on this site?

#14: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Feb 1, 2008
I love the way all our name sound in hawaian so yes we can have this discussion again and again

#15: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Feb 1, 2008
thank you our PBN ku`uipo!
#16: Gypso (Gypso) on Feb 1, 2008 [SPOILER]
Wonderful puzzle Keoi! No I could not name all the islands. Maybe one day I will visit. :)

You inspired a lovely conversation. Thank you! ^>^

You are amazing Naneki! Thanks for the pronunciation guide. It's such a delightfully lyrical language. No wonder you know it. :D
#17: Debra Greene (dlegreen) on Feb 4, 2008 [SPOILER]
Thanks! I too am shoveling white stuff and it's colder than a barn! Just thinking about Hawaii is making my day better, although I too, sadly, have never been. Is there a way I can change my log in and be Keoi forever? I should go check the forum - still learning my way around this wonderful site. Thanks to all.
#18: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Feb 4, 2008
Yes you can change it..I think it's in settings
#19: Arduinna (arduinna) on Feb 4, 2008 [SPOILER]
Besides, we don't all get in on all the discussions, Sylvain! I think I missed the "other" one.

Do I have a Hawaiian name, Naneki? (For Theresa, obviously.)

I would looove to go to Hawaii. My mother-in-law went last summer (to Ha-wa'-ya, as she calls it), and she came back telling us about this wonderful restaurant called TGI Fridays. I don't know what I expected. Her favorite restaurant in New Orleans was the Cheesecake Factory.

We had snow and ice last Thursday. Today (Monday), the high was 79. Tomorrow the high is 32 and it might snow again. Ahhh, Oklahoma...
#20: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Feb 4, 2008
THere are other place than Hawai for TGI Friday I went to one in Niagarra last summer
#21: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Feb 4, 2008
& there is one in San Bernardino, CA..they have gooood food & drinks!
Your name is Keleka!
The beaches there are awesome, but you have to watch out for flying cockroaches(They are BIG) I've only been over there once but it's a time I will never forget..& you haven't had a shave ice (snow cone) until you've had one there, Yummy!
#22: Arduinna (arduinna) on Feb 4, 2008
We have them here in Oklahoma! (TGI Fridays--not sure about flying cockroaches!) It's a huge chain. But that's my mother-in-law. Travel the world just to eat at chain restaurants and shop at Wal-Mart! Gotta love her!

Keleka-- I like it!
#23: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Feb 4, 2008
LOL
#24: Adam Nielson (monkey) on Jul 4, 2008
When I went to Oahu, I went to North Shore, and had a shave ice from Matsamoto's. It was great! Mahalo, and Mele-kaliki Maka (even though it's not December, and pardon the fact that I don't know how to spell it right).
#25: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Jul 11, 2008
that is one of the 2 best places to get shave ice the other one is just down the street from it..did you get your shave ice with ice cream?
#26: Adam Nielson (monkey) on Jul 11, 2008
I don't remember. I don't think I did.
#27: Arduinna (arduinna) on Jul 11, 2008
Are you talking about snow cones? Don't they all taste the same?
#28: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Jul 11, 2008
Adam if you ever go back there, add vanilla ice cream YUM!
Arduinna, no..shave ice is much finer, with snow cones the ice is chunkier you can chew the ice, where shave ice pretty much melts in your mouth & the flavoring that you add stays throughout the ice (snow cones the syrup ends up at the bottom)
#29: Arduinna (arduinna) on Jul 11, 2008
Ahh, so all the "shave ice" stands around here are lying to us! Because, based on your description, they're all snow cones!
#30: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Jul 11, 2008
yep...they are all frauds :)
the ones in Waikiki are snow cones too, although they claim to be shave ice
#31: Adam Nielson (monkey) on Jul 11, 2008
MMMM, now I am getting hungry. I want some ice cream.
#32: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Jul 11, 2008
tin roof sunday for me please!
#33: Jen (LightVader) on Jul 11, 2008
We got them where I work. And Mudslides and Sandy Marshes and ... a whole lot more.
#34: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Jul 11, 2008
MUDSLIDES!! are we talking Kahlua?? My favorite

#35: Jen (LightVader) on Jul 12, 2008
Non-alcoholic mudslides, Naneki - hot fudge, soft ice cream, peanut butter syrup, chocolate chips, whipped cream and a cherry.
#36: Nancy Snyder (naneki) on Jul 12, 2008
but I like the other one better :)
#37: Leimamo Kubo (Leimamo) on Apr 20, 2009
The two missing "major" islands are Niihau which is privately owned and Kaho'olawe which was once used by the military for target practice. No one lives on Kaho'olawe and there is still a lot of unexploded ordinance left. There are a lot of smaller islands or atolls in the Hawaiian chain which are only inhabited by birds, turtles, and seals. I live on the island of Oahu.
