There are so many different versions. Is it a wing and then a flea or is the flea directly on the fly?

Whenever Jim Flanagan sang this (he's an Irish-born professor at Southern Miss, who would sing at Fenian's Irish Pub in Jackson about once a month), he had many, many more verses and sang it with a delightful Irish accent. There's a flea on the flea on the feather on the wing on the bird on the twig on the branch on the limb on the tree in the hole in the bottom of the sea, I think is how it went.

I hindsight, while the "flea on the flea" was funny, it would make more sense if it were a flea on a fly.

Either way, he'd be pretty tipsy before he ever sang this one, so it was fun to hear him try to get all those steps out in one breath, then gasp before moving on to the chorus. (Which I can't remember, but it was more elaborate than "there's a hole, there's a hole, there's a hole in the bottom of the sea." I think "crackin'" was an adjective used, but I don't remember the rest.)
