There are 11 people on the field for defense and offense. The fans cheer so loudly it gives the home team an advantage, some say equivalent to having a 12th player on the field

Actually, that may be true for football (that Seattle has the loudest fans), but announcers and players have said that Salt Lake City, home of the Utah Jazz, have the loudest fans in NBA basketball.

That expression actually originated with Texas A&M University. The Aggies' fans were so loud at home games that it was said they were the 12th man on the team.
