A good old Singer. My grandmother had it. In my early childhood I liked to play with its pedal, but it was noisy and forbidden.

I had a peddle one that wasn't electric. It was in a beautiful wood cabinet with wrought iron sides and the peddle was wrought iron with Singer done in iron as well. Thx for your comments Tom,Thomas,Jota and Claudia.:)

Singer Featherweights - not treadle, usually black with gold lettering are serious collectors items now, they are known for having the most beautiful stitch and many modern sewers - especially quilters - love to sew on them.

BWT - the machines with pedals are called treadle machines.

Thanks for the puzzle. I love things associated with quilting.

I recognized this too. Only eight years ago, in Casamance, Senegal, I had a matching set of a cotton shirt and pants made by Daba, who was the camp's cook and a friend. She made some income taking in work for her treadle Singer sewing machine. Wouldn't be surprised if the machines are still made. We were able to get a needed spare part on a trip to Ziguinchor, the provincial capital.

The sewing machine was a useful tool in an area where the electric lines never really got outside the towns. And it was repairable with many parts able to be produced by a rough blacksmith rather than depending on long, unreliable supply lines back to the manufacturer on a different continent.

I was working at a tourist campemant, or bungalow colony just behind the Altantic Ocean beach, but far from town and far from an electric line.

Cool story Craig. I do know that some parts are still available,it's just a matter of finding where to get them. The internet sure helps.:)
