Not typographical Ns and Ds, but semaphore ones: N is two flags held down and out on each side, D is two flags held vertically one up and one down.
It didn't hurt that it echoed the three-triangle-in-a-circle radiation symbol.

Nuclear disarmament sounds like peace.
