kalamalama aka Jennifer McMahon

Thank you for doing a puzzle on my name. I'm so excited. Kalamalama is a translation of my English name, Jennifer. It means light or fair. Unlike most of my friends here in Hawai`i, I'm very fair skinned, so my name suits me. A light house is a perfect representation of my name. A "for short" version of my name could be ka la, which means "the sun." Actually, ka means "the." Lamalama means torch or torch fishing; fair-complexioned; bright-looking; animated; vivacious; or to glow. I used to be animated and vivacious, but I've slowed down some with age (72). Thank you, again. I'm so proud to be represented on this web site.

So glad you like it! I did search kalamalama and I found the definition, "beacon of light." Some of my cousins have a half-Hawaiian father. He gave each of them an English middle name and a Hawaiian one. I was always a little jealous :) There are nine of them but I only remember Kamakana, Pono, Leilani, and Kealoha'kaiakua (I'm very sure I didn't spell that last one right.)

We, here on this site, never cease to be amazed at the education we receive and the bits and pieces of information we pick up about people from all over the world. It's so nice to see you on this site Jennifer. And it was so nice of Sarah to research your name and come up with a nice puzzle.

Sarah probably already knows this, but I checked out the names of her cousins: Kamakana: the gift--a beautiful name to give a child; Pono: goodness or righteousness--I've heard that name used; Leilani: heavenly garland or heavenly flower--lei can be translated as a garland or a flower--I've heard of people named that, too. Kealohakai`akua: (I think I have the spelling right.) kealoha means the love, kai means sea or ocean, akua means god or God, when capitalized. I'm not sure how it would be translated, but perhaps "God's love of the sea." I've heard the name Kealoha or just Aloha used. I've also heard of people named Kai. I've not heard of people with akua as part of their name, but it could be in there somewhere. Hawaiians tend to have long names.

Norma is right,making friends from all over the world and learning things from each other is just one of the great things about webpbn,and we have Jan to thank for this. I've said it before and I'll say it again "thanks Jan".:)

I hadn't looked up the meaning of their names. I know they know what their names mean. And now that you mention it, I am sure it is Kealohakai'Akua with the capitalized "A". And I did find one more: Makanamaioke'Akua. Thank you for the information!
