What's that you say? Wrong bow?

Funny :)

This is one that'll sail right over the heads of the non-native speakers (and maybe some of the natives)

Thanks, Kristen. I guess we'll just have to explain to those that don't understand.:)

But a bow by any other name is still a bow, right?

Ok girls I guess I need help. Is that a bow or bowtie, and what exactly is it that is over my head.:)

The origial phrase refers to a cannon shot over the bow (rhymes with cow) of a ship.

In this case, the shot is over a bow (rhymes with go), either from a present or a bow tie. The type of bow doesn't really matter.

Thx Kristen.:)

Thanks Kristen. Hope that will help others, too.

You guys might want to check your comments on your own puzzles as there were several here that did not come up when I went to the forum. Must have gone astray with the updating.

It looks more like a hair ribbon such as those stereotypically worn by "bowheads" than a present-bow or a bow-tie bow (see http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bowhead). Of course, a "bowhead" can also be a whale, which a naval ship might be somewhat more like to fire over.

I don't think the updating has impacted the "forum" page at all. Though I've been wrong before.
