The Ramtop mountains are on the edge of the disk, Anhk-Morpork is nearer the center, and the tower of the Unseen University is not nearly that tall (on the outside at least).

Terry Pratchett has been our family reading-together first choice author for more than a decade now. We met him in person at the world SF con in Boston about ten years ago, and he's very personable (as you might expect from his writing).

Kristen, I think that the first few books in the Discworld series were okay, but then Pratchett really started hitting his stride, and the last 30 have been wonderful. He has wonderful characters who can be major characters in some books and bit players in others. Each book has a totally separate theme from the real world that is being satirized and commented upon, with a huge number of interesting tidbits tossed in for good measure. So, if you started with one of his early books, it might not have seemed exceptional to you. Fortunately, each book stands well on its own, so there is no need to read them in any order. (While there are groups of books about related characters that do progress from each other, they also each stand alone very well. The one advantage of reading them in more-or-less published order is that when a character from an earlier book makes a cameo, you understand the backreference better, but that is actually a fairly minor thing.)
