Thanks for the puzzle, Christine! Interesting solve. Instead of counting, it was more a process of filling in as he possibilities in the center shrunk.

I just did a bunch of spoonerism and was staring at this, trying to figure out how it was a spoonerism. (how embarrassing)

Looking at the clues before I started I thought it might be a spade, but the 1 clues on the sides made me think otherwise...if they were there to throw people like me off the scent, it worked :)
