Venice was fabulous. On the ferry ride over, I sat next to a scary old Italian woman with a thick moustache. Our entire tour group (about 25, high school kids and adult chaperons) rode gondolas, and the center gondola had an opera singer. He had it perfectly timed to hit a big, soaring note just as we passed below a bridge, so it echoed beautifully. There's a beautiful basilica at one end of the main piazza http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piazza_San_Marco
and you could buy a bag of dried corn to the feed the pigeons, which swoop in from all over and land on your head, your arms, and swarm all around your feet.
