depends, Bill... certain birds will just go for the sap(particularly on pines)
but you're right. it's more cause/effect though. hurt trees attract insects. not sure why exactly, but it's guessed that a hurt tree sends out a pheramone. and the insects attract the birds. btw, my degree is in horticulture... I love that you know that!
