This turned out much harder than I expected, but I took the title to heart and in the end plain old line solving did suffice to discover the solution.

Wow, that was tough. I couldn't get it by line solving - I had to do trial-and-backtrack. Could the autosolver do it?
#3: Jan Wolter (jan) on May 13, 2005
Yes, the autosolver (which does strictly line solving and not very smart line solving at that) was able to solve it - though it took it longer than it usually takes it to solve puzzles of similar sizes.

Fortified by the knowledge that the autosolver could do it, I too managed to find a way to solve it purely by line solving. It's pretty tricky though. There are places where spotting one non-obvious bit is the only way forward.

I solved it by logic alone though it took me awhile. I love the hard ones! Thanks!

I wish I was good enough at this to have much ability to control the difficulty of my puzzles. I like hard ones too, but not many come out that way.
#6: Mark Conger (aruba) on Jun 3, 2005
I did this one again. It's still hard!
#7: Rachel R (rachel) on Jul 24, 2007
That was so hard!

It amazes me when I dig back to your early puzzles Jan, how many are subjects that have been repeated by other authors years later. I had no idea this was here as I'm too easily distracted by the more recent selection of puzzles.
It's fun to reach back and find your puzzles to solve. Thanks Jan! ^>^

Very challenging!
#10: Levi Ross (rhodyboy888) on Aug 13, 2008
Excellent puzzle. Solvable by logic alone, although it did take me some time. Well Done!
#11: Mary Ellen Brockett (maryellen) on Jan 20, 2009
Excellent logical puzzle! It took me a while, but I really enjoyed it.
#12: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on Jun 10, 2009
Second time around, it was still just as hard. Sometimes finding one pixel at a time was all I could do. It was bordering on tedious with such searching, one pixel at a time.
Overall, a fairly decent image, though.

Great solve and great puzzle. Nothing new about that with one of Jan's puzzle. Always a pleasure.

Fun solve.

I don't usually tackle big puzzles, but since this one was by Jan (and I think I may have watched him creating it, many years ago), I gave it a try. The image is from one of my favorite books ever -- fun!

Jan would be 61 tomorrow. Sigh.....

Nice puzzle. Had to do a little guessing, but not too much.
