I only had to look ahead in one spot other than that I had no guessing. Cool image, and movement.

thanks Ellen

good solve tom :)

thx Trav

good puzzle, Tom. very fun solve!

it's one of those that you "know" what goes where, but you take the time to work out logically. started out simply enough with el on the top 5, but had to think a lil later in the game...
#6: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Nov 18, 2012
yep...took some time thinking to make it :) thanks

Nice solve!

thx Jota

I guessed. I just can't track stuff as far ahead as some of you. :(
#10: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Nov 19, 2012
you do great Joel... I'm a fan
#11: Gator (gator) on Aug 22, 2013 [HINT]
After initial line logic, edge logic on row 1 makes R1C4-6 and R1C16-20 dots. Edge logic on row 2 to make R2C17-20 dots. Some line logic.

Looking at row 1, there are only 2 ways to finish the 5 clue without making row 2 invalid (R1C7-11 or R1C11-15). In both cases, R2C4-7 and R2C9 will be dots and R2C13 will be black. More line logic.

R3C4-R5C4 are dots from edge logic. R3C5-R5C5 and R3C6-R5C6 are also dots with edge logic.

With edge logic again, R8C1-2 and R8C4-5 are dots. We can also make R11C1-2 and R11C4-5 dots with edge logic. A little more line logic.

Looking back to row 1, if the 5 clue goes on the left side, then R3C8 will be a dot and R10C3 will be black. This makes row 3 invalid, so the 5 clue must go on the right (as I stated above there are only 2 possible places the 5 clue could go). A lot more line logic. (Don't forget the dot at R19C6.)

With edge logic R20C1, R20C5, and R20C20 are dots. More line logic.

R13C15-R14C15 and R13C20-R14C20 will also be dots with edge logic.

The left 3 clue in row 20 has to be at either R20C2-4 or R20C7-9. In either case R19C1-2 and R19C4-5 will be dots.

And with that I am stuck.

Wish I could remember, Gator.

Found to be solvable with deep lookahead by infrapinklizzard.
#14: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Dec 21, 2018 [HINT]
Continuing on from Gator's position:

No matter where the left 3 in r16 goes, it will force the 3 in r20 into c2-4.

LL

EL 2 c1 = r13-14 white
a little LL

EL 3 c4 = r13 w (if it were in r13-15 it would cause a block of one in c5)
a little LL

Deep EL 2 r14 (vs r11) = if it were in c7-8, it would leave no room for the 2 in r11, so r14c8 must be white
(no LL)

Two-way logic 2 r14: It can only go in two positions: c4-5 or c6-7. In either position r13c7-8 must be white.
LL

EL 2 c2: if it were in r9-10 (thus making c2r16-17 white) it would leave no room for the 2 in c1. So c2r9-10 must be white.
LL to finish.

Since this was so hard and my first step is in the grey area between moderate and deep lookahead, I'll mark this Deep Lookahead.

Had to guess. Don't understand what is meant by "deep look ahead". Also, I don't really understand the image, even though it is very clear.
#16: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Oct 8, 2019
"Deep lookahead" means that there IS a logical solution, but you'd need to keep several steps in your head, to make sure it all pans out.
#17: BlackCat (BlackCat) on Dec 18, 2020
I must have started this wrong because I did a log of guessing.
#18: Donald Clysdale (don) on Feb 15, 2021
This is a pleasant but tricky puzzle. I never needed the Hint button much less needed to guess, but there were several times it was "What if this were here", and then realizing there was a contradiction. Don
