history lesson: Halloween is the Eve of the Catholic holiday, All Saint's Day. Catholics used to dress up as saints and go around, which is where the whole costume thing got started. Non-Catholics started to mock them...."you're a saint, ok, I'll dress as a witch." "you believe in a holy ghost, fine I'll dress as a ghost". spun off from there, and the rest is history.

Chris just turned 11, and he's not so little anymore. :)
If we go at all, he'll be a young hobbit again, but it'll be super cold tomorrow night, rather TOO cold for short pants and no shoes, so we'll see.

Halloween is actually an amalgamation of quite a few traditions. The costumes probably come from dressing up to avoid the notice of bad spirits during Samhain (Celtic). More modern Irish/Scottish practices include mumming (with costumes) and the passing out of food in exchange for songs. In Scotland and Wales, there were also those who went around as evil spirits to be propitiated with treats.

Christianity came along and bundled these all up with their own ceremony of the dead, All Saints' Day, or as it was known then, All Hallows' Day. Thus the evening before became All Hallows' Evening or Hallowe'en. This got the mucky pagan stuff away from the christian holiday, but kept it within shouting distance.

Then the day after All Saints' Day is All Souls' Day which is the celebration of one's dead relatives, now mostly unheeded except by those countries that celebrate the Day of the Dead (El Día de Muertos): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_day_of_the_dead
