Ira Hayes, one of the flag raisers was from Arizona and was an American Indian.

Hayes was never comfortable with his new-found fame, however, and after his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps he descended into alcoholism. He died of exposure and alcohol poisoning on January 24, 1955 after a night of drinking, and was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

there were 4 in the famous image. I only did 3. btw, my grandfather (or dja dja, as us Polish kids called him) was there. the guy used to get books from the library and tell us the names of those in the pics

Actually there were 5. From Wikipedia:On February 23, Hayes, together with fellow Marines Rene Gagnon, Harlon Block, Franklin Sousley, and Mike Strank; and Navy Corpsman John Bradley; raised the American flag over Mount Suribachi, an event photographed by Joe Rosenthal

He was quite a hero in Arizona and we heard a lot about him in school.
