Puzzle Description:

A rolling picture caused by lack of vertical stability. Is that Ed Sullivan?

Does that ever bring back those horrible frustrating moments. Then, by the time you got it to stop the program would be over.

Remembering this tells something about the age of us all. :)

I love it!

I was pretty young when we had a black & white TV with vertical hold, but I remember it from the late 70s.

Maybe Jack LaLanne or Richard Simmons on an exercise show.

Something similar is still possible in digital TV. But you're highly unlikely to see it at home because that would mean something has gone wrong at the TV station (instead of something fixable on your television like the old vertical hold issue). It happens if the incoming signal is "out of sync" with the broadcasting equipment.

But if we see a signal like that we don't put it on the air, so chances are you won't see it at home, we just see it in the control room until it can be fixed (sent through a converter).

I work at a TV station if that wasn't obvious :)

It also looks like one of those toys where you push the sides and it flips over. Yes, I am old enough to remember vertical hold issues...

how about when it keeps moving and you keep tying to watch the movie

Done that Tom,annoying, but when the show is good and you have no choice. Oh well.:)

I figured Laura, sounds like a cool job. Not as good as Kurt's mind you.:)

Fun puzzle, Brian. You young 'uns cannot appreciate the skill - no, art - involved in maintaining a balanced image on those wonderful, huge, temperamental television sets.

The worst was when one or more of your tubes were going bad and you couldn't keep the horizontal stabilaziztion. You had this diagonal mess that you still tried to watch until you could get down to the tube test station at Thrifty Drug Store.

make sure you mark those tubes and have a diagram for re-placement lmbo
