You didn't have to get up much. Most markets only had 4-5 channels. I lived in LA and we had about 8 channels. The big 3 networks plus about 5 local stations.

We had 3 channels when I was growing up (ABC, NBC, CBS). When you turned the set off, the picture shrunk to a tiny white dot, which stayed visible for some time afterwards.

You would have to turn the set on to let it warm up for a few minutes before the picture would stabilize. The sets had adjustment knobs for horizontal and vertical hold.

Tin foil would help with reception sometimes.

Remember the broadcast sign off with the national anthem and test pattern?

Tin foil helps with lots of things...like keeping the aliens out of your head ;) I created a similar puzzle.

I remember the old TVs. I used to watch that show with the mouse. The old set was really rectangular and made out of wood...and it had just the little metal part on top...that's where you put the little piece of cheese and waited for the show to start.
