Puzzle Description:

2 days at 90, 4 more over 80, 38 days without rain. No humidity, no mosquitoes, no hurricanes, no tornadoes, ever.

No deep look ahead either. I solved it from scratch. Initially, I didn't have the water, and it was basically unsolvable. It works itself out. I don't recall if I only used line logic. Getting worn out making it solvable. I believe that I did only use line logic.

We DO have an occasional earthquake...

but you ain't got trees !

Too many vampires ;)
#5: Gator (gator) on Aug 29, 2012 [HINT]
It is not line logic only.

Most of the way through the puzzle, look at column 19. If the 5 clue is to be in the lower part of the puzzle, then both R24C19 and R26C19 would have to be black, making both R24C20 and R26C20 black. This cause column 20 to be invalid. So R25C19 must be the 1 clue of column 19. More line logic.

No matter where the 2 clue in column 19 goes R9C20 and R11C20 will be black. More line logic.

I'm going to stop here for now as I'm not seeing another non-deep lookahead move that is helpful.

I finished the letters, have no idea if by looking ahead or what, we'll wait for Gator to decide. Meanwhile I hope you are not sleepless ...

I'm packing. (I wish) Once it was obvious that it was the US of A, a few educated guesses made everything fall into place.

Restaged it. I couldn't solve it today. I must've been bleary last night after trying for hours to tweak it to get it solvable. It solves now. I'll post a hint below.

Smile logic on the 3 in column 20.

Petra, the vampires are in Forks (4 hours away). Tom, what you mean, no trees?
#13: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Aug 30, 2012
was a joke tom.... glad you tweaked it

I would be a bit concerned about tsunamis, though. LOL Beautiful weather up there!

Ellen: We are 90 miles from the Pacific protected by the Olympic Penninsula (where there are vampires as evidenced by Twilight).

I took a quality point off because while you included Mexico, you drowned eastern Canada.

I solved it logically, but I rated it as deep lookahead.

You also need to watch out for the garbage that came across the Pacific from last year's tsunami in Japan.

Thinking of Eastern Canada (been there). Once you attempt solving so many times, it gets old. I wanted it to be reasonably hard, and once part of Mexico was added, it worked. Fortunately, most of the garbage is going to the home of the Oregon Ducks ;) Why did you rate it deep?
#18: Petra Lassen (Stjarna) on Sep 2, 2012
Tom, I know where the vampires are. ;) Still too close. Some of my daughters' friends would get way too excited. Luckily, my daughters aren't into those things. :D
#19: Ellen Vollor (evollor) on Sep 3, 2012
Vampires? Wow, they really do exist?
#20: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Sep 3, 2012
Just the wimpy, sparkly kind. ;)

It's a gorgeous corner of the world. Most of my dad's family lives in OR and WA, but I've only visited once.

Petra, all the way over in Forks where it rains 364 days a year...
