OK Jan your making me remember too much...isn't it amazing how technology has changed. I had to clean out my Dad's storage & I found his reel to reel & a beta cam, my teenage daughter had no idea what they were.

just wanted to out do you all and say that our local radio station has some wax edison cylinders from the 1800's and they play the music from them (now converted to mp3). Check it out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonograph_cylinder

I recently started a project that began when I was able to restore some files I backed up on 5" floppies in 1993. It worked on the first try!

Regarding Edison wax cylinders, They Might Be Giants once recorded a song ("I Can Hear You") one one of them. Clearly analog recording is the way to go for best audio quality ;-)
