I'm pretty sure I have read that scientists are hoping to recreate the woolly mammoth. I don't understand the science, but it has something to do with elephants and mammoth DNA recovered from the permafrost. There is a terrific series of books by Jasper Fforde featuring Tuesday Next, a "Literary Detective" who works in Bookworld, who has a pet dodo.
These are some of the best books I've ever read, with hilarious humor, incredibly imaginative plots, characters, and villains.
Read one, and you will be hooked.
