Puzzle Description:

On Jan. 23, 1912, The International Opium Convention was signed at The Hague. This was the first international treaty to try to control illegal drugs. The image is an antique opium hookah.

There are so many cool/interesting/important things that happened in the year 1912. I thought it would be fun to have that as a theme, because I want to see what everyone will come up with.

Oh, I thought you might like a little more information on that Treaty. It was signed by Germany, the U.S., China, France, the U.K., Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Persia, Portugal, Russia, and Siam. The Convention provided that "The contracting Powers shall use their best endeavours to control, or to cause to be controlled, all persons manufacturing, importing, selling, distributing, and exporting morphine, cocaine, and their respective salts, as well as the buildings in which these persons carry such an industry or trade."

The Convention was implemented in 1915 and went into force globally in 1919 when it was incorporated into the Treaty of Versailles. It was revised in 1925 to include a prohibition on hashish.

I'm not going to make any comment on the efficacy of international drug control. (I live on hour away from Mexico.) I know that the most dangerous drugs are the legal ones. I chose this subject mostly because I thought a hookah would make a cool image for a puzzle.

Thanks, Teresa. I knew it was a hookah as I was solving. Great idea, too.

The caterpillar got a little drowsy and is resting off to the side.

You know, Lewis Carroll's book was first published in 1865 but it was not very popular at first. It did not really take off until the next century. By 1912, the book's popularity was growing and at least a dozen new editions had been published, in many languages, including German, French, and Italian. A few years later, the original manuscript that Carroll had given to the real Alice was sold at Sotheby's for ₤15,400, a world record for the sale of a manuscript at the time.

And that's what happened 100 years ago. :-)

:-D @ Tom.

Maybe I was the real Alice. Did you know the real Alice had dark curly hair with bangs? That was me!

Great puzzle Teresa. I really like the topic idea too. I love history and I'm sure the year 1912 could make for lots of interesting puzzles.
