Snow Globe. Explanation in comments.

We all get angry and frustrated sometimes. Nothing wrong with having feelings. It's what we do with those feelings that matters. One can respond to anger by yelling, name calling, harsh words, swearing, vengeful acts, or physical aggression. These are all forms of abuse. Too many times, these reactions are expressed in the home, within the family. Another way to express frustration and anger might be a peaceful resolution to the problem at hand.

I have striven to teach my children the importance of expressing their feelings in respectful, appropriate ways.

In spite of all my good parenting and best efforts (including role modeling healthy behavior), my daughter (who has a neurological disability) still struggles with controlling the impulse to lash out at others.

Her Auntie Mary suggested giving her a snow globe. When she feels angry, she can shake the snow globe and watch the snow fall, and wait to do or say anything until the snow has all settled. I'm not sure I want her to have something this heavy and hard to hurl impulsively in a moment of anger. So I keep one on the top of my upright piano that I can pick up and shake and watch as I calm down during one of my own moments of frustration.

I believe one of the most important things I can teach my children is how to find peaceful solutions to their problems. We talk about what happens when violence is answered with more violence. And the adults in the family set a good example for the children (and adults with mental disabilities who think like children).

Wonderful & wise sentiments, fasstar. Too bad more people don't share your ability to think as reasonably as you. This world would be a much more peaceful and happy place if there were! :) Unfortunately, society seems to be well on its way to becoming a real life "Idiocracy"! :/

Seems to me, Auntie Mary offers a wonderful variation of the "Count-to-10" method. I think I know of a few folks who might be getting snow globes for Christmas (including myself)! ;)

Beautiful, Teresa! Have a wonderful holiday season.
#7: Jota (jota) on Dec 12, 2011
Thanks for a beautiful entry Teresa! And a great story.

Counting to ten ...

Now who rated this as difficult? As soon as I saw the grid I knew that to make it more interesting for me to solve I had to do all the black first, so the blue would solve with only one stroke. I call that easy.
#8: Claudia (clau_bolson) on Dec 12, 2011
simply wonderful, Teresa, thanks!

I get a mix of T and Al - I have a snow globe that came with my collectors' edition of "The Polar Express." I collect Santas - figurines, tapestries, ornaments, etc. A few years ago my best friend got the movie for me as a gift and as part of my collection. It still sits unopened on my shelves.

It always amazes me how much detail you can put into a puzzle. Lovely. Thank you.
#13: Susan Duncan (medic25733) on Dec 13, 2011 [SPOILER]
One of the most beautiful puzzles ever! So peaceful and it almost looks like my log cabin in a snow globe instead of the woods.
#14: Teresa K (fasstar) on Dec 13, 2011
Thanks, everyone.

You have a log cabin, Susan? How cool. My brother lives in a log cabin in the mountains in Colorado.
#15: Nancy (nbarsi) on Dec 13, 2011
Ditto to all the sentiments already given. Warm. heartfelt and caring.

In the mountains would be even better but we are close to the Rideau Canal. We are truly in the woods however - our closest neighbour is a few miles away. The only puzzle I ever made was a depiction of my house.

I remember that puzzle, Susan. It was really well done. You should create more! :-)
#18: MrsThing (mrsthing2) on Dec 2, 2013 [SPOILER]
